The ALS Association, St. Louis Regional Chapter

ALS is a fatal neurodegenerative disease affecting some 5,600 new patients annually (15 new cases per day).

The ALS Association, St. Louis Regional Chapter is dedicated to improving the quality of life for those affected by Amyotrophic lateral Sclerosis, educating the community, and supporting research. This Chapter provides services and programs to ALS patients and their families residing in Eastern Missouri as well as Central and Southern Illinois.

More details about ALS:

ALS stands for amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (also referred to as ALS, Lou Gehrig's disease, Motor Neuron Disease or MND) is a neurological disease, characterized by progressive muscle weakness and atrophy (wasting away or loss of muscle).  It affects the nerve cells that control muscles we can move voluntarily. For some undiscovered reason, nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord, known as motor neurons, gradually are damaged and die. The result is that muscles do not receive the necessary messages, and, therefore, do not function properly, resulting in paralysis.

Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis ALS was first identified in 1874 by a French neurologist, Jean Martin Charcot.
