Frequently Asked Questions about Consulting

Category: About Consulting
Thinking about switching from a full-time employee to contractor or consultant? Here are some of the most common questions that we get from others who have made the transition.
What is a Consultant?
A consultant, or contract employee, is someone who works for NetEffects on temporary job assignments. They are typically highly skilled. The assignment can last as little as a month and can easily go from one to five years. At the completion of the assignment you would move to another contract assignment.
Is travel involved?
Although many contractors move around the country for new and interesting assignments, NetEffects typically places its consultants in the areas where we have regional offices and daily travel is not required. A large percentage of our work is in the St. Louis metropolitan area. Wherever we place you, your successful projects will help you build your personal reputation and “brand” that will allow us to market you on another assignment.
Why are Contractors paid more than traditional employees?
NetEffects contractors are paid more for a number of reasons:
- Your position is temporary and you do assume the risk of being non-billable even though your in-demand skills will help you find new assignments
- You are responsible for your vacation time, retirement and training. We pay you more so that you can afford to take care of these areas on your own
While many of our competitors don’t follow-up with you when your assignment ends, NetEffects proactively markets your skills to other clients well in advance of your assignment completion.
How can I ensure repeat assignments?
The “number one” way to keep yourself continuously billable is by constantly learning new skills. If you are diligent about learning new and emerging skills this will enhance your probability of getting another assignment quickly. Also, newer skills command higher pay rates.
What’s the best way to get a job in this field with NetEffects?
Create a consulting oriented resume and submit it to us. You will be assigned to a senior recruiter who will contact you with feedback about your resume and what positions match your skills. You can also search our website for open jobs.
