5 Things Developers Wish Their Non-Tech Colleagues Knew
WE DON’T “ALL DO PRETTY MUCH THE SAME THING."
Software, web, mobile, apps – all have their own unique nuances. Some of us dabble in a little bit of everything, but lumping all of us in the same pot together is like lumping all doctors together. While there are general MD’s there are also doctors that specialize (and excel) in one area. The same goes for our field. Just because someone does Java development doesn’t mean they do JavaScript…
WE ARE NOT YOUR PERSONAL HELP DESK.
We understand how difficult it must be to “find that one email, compress a file to send, or figure out why your computer isn’t starting,” but do yourself and us a favor – learn the basics. There is nothing worse than coming into an office and finding that all a person had to do is turn their surge-protected power strip on and their whole computer “mysteriously” works again. We'd also like to recommend a wonderful search tool called Google. You can ask it about anything and get an answer within seconds. Whatever is happening to you has probably happened to someone else and they’ve talked about it online and have a solution to your technical difficulties.
WE DON’T ALL LIKE STAR WARS, LIVE WITH OUR PARENTS, AND SURF 4CHAN.
Not that there is anything wrong with any of that, but some of us are die-hard Trekkies/Trekkers, have our own places, and browse Reddit.
DON’T DROP TECH BUZZWORDS UNLESS YOU KNOW WHAT YOU’RE TALKING ABOUT
But even then, your still probably shouldn’t. Nobody likes the person who throws out lingo like some bad carnival barker just to appear to be “in the know.” When you sound stupid, we lose respect for you, plain and simple.
JUST BECAUSE IT’S TECHNICAL, DOESN’T MEAN WE UNDERSTAND IT.
Remember our point above about Google? Yes, we use it (amongst other resources) to gain a better understanding of technical subject matter that we’re not familiar with. These are just 5 things developers wish their non-tech colleagues knew. There are more of course. But we're too busy trying to decipher what it was that marketing said to go on...All animated gifs courtesy of giphy
